A committee chair in another state, a bill's sponsor, a member whose vote you're watching. You aren't their constituent and the draft will say so plainly — that's the honest version, and it's the one that gets read.
Identical letters get counted as one. A few lines in your own voice get read. Sending unlocks once there's something real here.
Everything here is built from public records. Bills, sponsors and legislative status come from Congress.gov and GovInfo. The “bill status” box on each campaign is refreshed nightly from the Congress.gov API (a work of the U.S. government, not subject to copyright) and, for state bills, from the LegiScan API by LegiScan LLC, licensed under CC BY 4.0 — reformatted for display, not modified in substance. That refresh runs on a schedule and writes a file to this site; your browser never contacts either service. Agency actions come from the Federal Register. Districts come from the U.S. Census Bureau geocoder. Member contact details come from the unitedstates/congress-legislators project and Open States. No private, purchased or scraped personal data is used anywhere on this site.
Disclosure — and where the lines are. The author of this site works with Haven Access, an organization active in kratom policy. No salary or compensation is received from them, though Haven Access has supplied materials for advocacy work in the past. That relationship is disclosed here rather than buried, because you should be able to weigh it — including the in-kind part, which is the bit most people leave out. Civic Duty is not a Haven Access project: it is funded personally by the author, built and operated independently, and Haven Access has no editorial control over which campaigns appear here, which members are targeted, or what any message says. Haven Access maintains its own separate website and speaks for itself. Beyond that disclosed relationship, Civic Duty is not associated with, funded by, sponsored by, or acting on behalf of any advocacy group, trade association, industry body, PAC, campaign or company — in this issue area or any other. If that ever changes, it will be disclosed in this box, plainly, before anything else changes.
This is a public tool published by a blog. Civic Duty is built and hosted on blaskattacks.com, an independent political investigation blog, and is offered free to anyone who wants to use it — including people who disagree with the positions in the campaigns. The lookup is shared with representme.blaskattacks.com.
Your words are your own. Nothing you type is transmitted to us or seen by anyone but you — this is a static page with no server behind it. Two things are kept, in your own browser only: step 2 (your name, town, state and the districts a lookup found, never your street address) so you don't type it again, and, on the docket comment tool, your draft so a closed tab does not cost you the work. Neither leaves your device or is readable by us. Forget me on this device in step 2 and Delete saved draft on the docket tool erase them; use them on a shared computer. Your own words in step 3 are not saved. Every message is a draft you are expected to read, edit and choose to send. Every factual claim in the campaign panels is sourced and linked so you can check it before you put your name on it.
